Flags 08:03
Flags Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, flappers, dappers and those of you not so assigned. Come and witness the great panoply of all the worlds’ flags flittering together in the wind. A celebration, a festival of colour and culture. See the stars and stripes, flutter in the wind See inalienable rights, falter and rescind What was becoming a plutocracy Has given dawn to a golden kakistocracy The dream is turning sour As the bottom of the barrel rises to power Like a duck to an oil slick Fluffy on top but swimming in shit See the union flag, failing at the seams See morality lost in sovereign dreams What was once something with a monarchy Is quickly becoming a kleptocracy The stiff upper lip start to tremble When we start to see what we resemble Tectonic plates of political power are shifting beneath our feet There’s new friends and new enemies to meet Beast are stirring in the East and West Beast both big and small Blood is rising will there be a test Who will give their all? See six stars rising on a field of red See sabres rattled to spread a little dread Best not cross little dictators We really hope to see you later He toys with going nuclear And plays with chemicals to feast on fear They could be such an easy bet Except he sent the fleet to Oz instead See the hammer and sickle hide behind red, blue and white Watch them shiver in the Baltics at the prospect of a fight See him flex his bare torso patiently It’s the long game, ‘like chess you see’ With propaganda to destabilise the nations The whole of The Europes will be prime for annexation And closer to home… See satires skirling battered in the breeze Everybody knowing no future comes with ease Divided loyalties passions running high What would happen either way? When will they get to try? Is it a brave move to go it alone? Or are they better staying playing ‘home’? Tectonic plates of political power are shifting beneath our feet There’s new friends and new enemies to meet Beast are stirring in the East and West Beast big and small Blood is rising will there be a test Who will give their all? To prevent a fall Now the leaders of the free world are liars and fiends And this nightmare can’t be undreamed While we turn our backs on every friend The only hands left outstretched will lead us to the end What unity, what harmony, We may not see the like for many years to come.

The Song formally known as Europe Take a nation discombobulated Down at heel and so frustrated Fuel an anger never really sated To vote for things never really stated Was the tipping point just past Will we take our country back at last? Hold on tight it changing fast There ain’t much hope in the die that’s cast Have we seen all this before? It hard not to break Godwin’s Law So we chose to shut the door Yes we really said ‘come here no more’ Now the right has gone all central This Fascism is incremental This justice is temperamental This folly is monumental Everyone had a voice On a so called ‘simple’ choice Was it true democracy? We’ll just have to wait and see So many years of preventing war Yes of course there are some flaws But surely we’re better when we’re more Whatever happened to Esprit de Corps? Entwined in Legislation Broad philosophical speculation Commonality aspirations A cross-cultural celebration Simplified a complex notion To sovereignty based on an Ocean Sell it with fear and blind devotion Engineer a divided population Left Wing Self-Flagellation Tolerates Governmental Obfuscation Fuels xenophobic fermentation With Patriotic Masturbation Everyone had a voice On a so called ‘simple’ choice Was it true democracy? We’ll just have to wait and see And now we’ve got our Sovereignty Who cares if it costs our morality? Will we scramble around to make any deal? To fuck ourselves for any despotic heel Who can imagine the consequence? Of decisions made without good sense So many issues are yet to form The pieces are setting for the perfect storm It happened here, it happened there, It seems it can happen anywhere Democracy taken for granted Turns out results rather unexpected

It’s a long way from Weimar to here It’s a long way from Weimar to here It’s a long way from Weimar to here We’re only two years short of the Century Some say comparisons are clear It’s a long way from Weimar to here It’s a long way from Weimar to here They reaped the rewards of ignorant sophistry Democracy died with a cheer You heard all the rhetoric So make what you will of it From the 3rd Reich to Trump and Brexit We’ll fix it with our Kabarett We will pour all our ire Into exquisite satire We will expose all the liars We will put out the fires It’s a long way from here to Weimar I’s a long way from here to Weimar As the progress of the decades is turned on its head We thought progress had come too far to be dead It’s not a long way from Weimar to here It’s not a long way from Weimar to here The people have spoken, the experts were broken And now the new normal is here

Good Intentions Good intentions, but short attention We thought we had perspective Misplaced empathy, accused apathy We preach to the converted We thought we knew best pointed ‘ignorants’ Blamed them as they blamed the immigrants No one understood but everyone played their part And put us on a path we’ve seen before Hindsight prescience, a social arrogance We couldn’t admit to ourselves So much talking, so little action We couldn’t believe it would come to this Applaud our efforts, we all bare our cross But who can really say they did enough We need to choose a side of the wall The wall to be strung up against We thought progress was our moral realm But it’s one step forward and no way back Marching Left right left right left right left right Right Right Right Right Right We’ve seen progress progress many times before A certain rhetoric and pathways to war The Shits make a killing while the rest get increasingly poor And those at the bottom still get ignored We got to pretend that nothing was wrong As we beat out progress on our sanctimonious drum Left Right Left Right Left Right Left Right Right Right Right Right Right We thought progress was our form to dictate But there’s plenty of happy people out there tonight Marching Left Right Left Right Left Right Left Right Right Right Right Right Right Right Right It’s left right left right HAs anyone heard of the Overton window? There is a spectrum of politics which moves from the extreme left, through moderation and middle ground all the way to moderation and extremism on the right. The Overton window is a frame you can place on any part of the spectrum depending on the prevailing bias of society and politics so that a relative centre ground is revealed. We have this little suspicion things are currently leaning to the right….. we would like this concepts through the medium of line dancing. One step forward and u turn right around Two steps back and kick your heel down Kick out kick out Step to the right to the right to the right But what to do with so much power on the right. peace to the world…

Boy aged three Once there was a boy aged three who got in a boat with his family They set sail on a big blue sea to see what they could see at sea He was excited and a little afraid this was no holiday He’d seen war and poverty he was a tiny little refugee “A refugee? A likely story, more likely he was coming over here to steal our jobs!” “But there are no jobs for three year-olds in this country.” “Of course not, all the foreign three year-olds have stolen them!” After many days he spied land, he stretched out his little hand But he could not quite reach the lovely sandy tourist beach He dipped in, began to swim, the water felt nice on his skin He gave a little cry, hardly a sound then this little boy drowned It took the death of a boy aged three To make the world feel sympathy And all those in democracies Said we must make room for the refugee When this boy died in the sea He made a wave of empathy And all those in society We shall welcome all the refugee A soldier carried him ashore, oh but for a few lengths more Of this scene a picture was took, sent around the world for all to look at Everybody stared and everybody cared and all declared their moral outrage Everybody cared and all declared they’d open up their heart Then many many many more boats came, crowding the seas more of the same And many many many more children died and over time less people cried In some places there was disquiet, skirmishes, a little riot There’s only so many we can take, and most of them are surely fake When millions crossed the big blue sea the tide went out on sympathy And all those in democracies said there’s only so much room for the refugee When millions crossed the big blue sea the tide went out on empathy And all those in society said there’s only so much room for the refugee Yes we know that you can see, empty lands lying free But you don’t know, you can’t see that minds are too small for the refugee… And what of this boy aged three who sailed across the big blue sea? His star shone bright, he found fame, but can anyone remember his name? . . . . . Aylan Kurdi, 2012 - 2015

Bombing for Peace We got cruise, laser guided, multiple warhead Expensive, explosive, guaranteed all dead, No civilian casualties, no troops on the ground What you sow and what you grow will eventually come around Did you see it on the news, are you sure it’s not a ruse Are you being used, you’ve got rights which you’ve abused Did you sort fact from fiction, did you soon tract from friction Did you sort truth from the lies, did you ever stop. To wonder why? And if this terror rises up, we’ll reign this terror down Watch the swarms of politicians, with shares in ammunitions Turn a blind eye to their minions as they try to make their billions Look to the other way, law unsound. No responsibility when it comes back around Watch them scrabble in their playground, No compassion, hawks abound So when this terror rises up, we’ll reign this terror down We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace And you’ll note there is this throng of people running from Another nations bombs, for this better life we all long Put on your jacket we can sing a national song. Eat your chocolate cake, we’ve a war to prolong So when this terror rises up, we’ll reign this terror down We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace Engage audience We shall bomb them to stop them coming here Bomb them though they are not really near Bomb them as we shed another tear Bombing them justifies our fear Bomb them in the dead of night Bomb them yes, that is our right Bomb them to fight the good fight Bomb them to keep them out of sight Bomb their livelihoods, bomb their tools Bomb their hospitals bomb their schools Bomb them as they sleep, bomb them as they flee We’re bombing for the good of humanity We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace We’re bombing for peace bombing for peace bombing for peace So when this terror rises up, we’ll reign this terror down

Punch a Nazi? We’re not ones for advocating violence But does there comes a time when we need more than silence? A time when we all need more than words? If there’s any chance of being heard? When the truth can’t compete with the liars Does there come a time to fight fire with fires? If we stand and fight are we just as bad? Can we live with ourselves if we miss the chance we had? And so we’ll put this question to you We’re very interested in your view Don’t think too much just shout it out loud It’s just a question all answers are allowed Is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it ok to punch a Nazi? We’re not talking about anything too fancy Just a right left hook…. Would you punch a Nazi? Would it damage, the moral high ground? Does what comes around, come back around? We stand tall in the face of adversity. Is standing up tall enough against brutality? If we’re free to stand together in peaceful protest Does it really help those who are actually oppressed? Are we leaving the dirty work to someone else? So we can maintain our consciences and moral health And so we’ll put this question to you We’re very interested in your view It’s your opinion so shout it out loud Do try not to be swayed by the crowd Is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it better to stand there stoically? Is it ok to punch a Nazi? We’re not here to incite any fights And we’re really not the violent types In fact we’re getting anxious just thinking about conflict We’re lovers and artists, we’re really rather quiet But we don’t have to walk the streets in fear Because of who we love or how we appear Or where we’re from or how we sound So we must all stand up and do something when there’s such much hate around Is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it better to stand there stoically? Is it ok to punch a Nazi? So is it ok to punch a Nazi? Is it ok to slit a Nazi throat? Would it be right to have a final Nazi solution? Is it ok to gloat?

Weimar Kabarett As this new world is getting old It’s hard to believe what we’re told But why should we cower Beneath the balance of power When all the people have their say… We’ll sing and shout and shout on a stage Into our art we shall pour all our rage But the Weimar Kabarett Didn’t beat Hitler in a day And all the people can do is have their say… have their say Or maybe Sing and love and dance live life to the full given half the chance So remember and forget in moderation What example is set for the next generation? As this new world is getting cold It’s hard to believe what we’ve been sold This bonfire of vanities These collective insanities Well all the people had their say We’ll sing and shout and shout on a stage Into our art we shall pour all our rage But the Weimar Kabarett Didn’t beat Hitler in a day And all the people can do is have their say… have their say Or maybe Sing and love and dance live life to the full given half the chance So remember and forget in moderation What example is set for the next generation?

Kabakunst 04:00
KABAKUNST Day to day there’s so much threat From terrorist to national debt To foolish politicians making bets With populist epithet We live in times of so much doubt Not quite in and not quite out Let’s shake it all about Can’t hear the world for the shout As the world is goes up in smoke It’s getting hard to feel any hope And even if we have another vote Tonight we are in the same boat It’s KABAKUNST, We’re here to play It’s KABAKUNST, Please join in, we hope you can stay It’s KABAKUNST, You’re complicit in all that you do come what may It’s KABAKUNST, Kabarett, the conjugal art It’s KABAKUNST, Letting the audience rejoice in their part It’s KABAKUNST, To share the Kunst from the bottom of our hearts And yes there are many better off than us But there’s oh so many worse, who don’t make a fuss Their lives are not superfluous It’s not all you me them us….. We’re so lucky we can have some respite To forget our troubles go out for a night And listen to frivolous songs about rights And our future It seems the world is going up in smoke And even though we have another little vote It’s getting hard to feel any hope But for tonight we are in the same boat It’s KABAKUNST, We’re here to play It’s KABAKUNST, Please join in we hope you can stay It’s KABAKUNST, You’re complicit in all that you do come what may It’s KABAKUNST, Kabarett, the conjugal art It’s KABAKUNST, Letting the audience rejoice in their part It’s KABAKUNST, To share the Kunst from the bottom of our hearts Dappers flappers One and all Sing together As we fall Dappers flappers One and all Keep Kabakunst in your heart We love you all.

about

The Creative Martyrs Glasgow, UK

The Creative Martyrs, first appeared in 1883, performing cabaret song and speciality acts.

It was not until their Weimar Cabaret acts of the 1920s that the by then jaded Martyrs found a sympathetic ear.

They further developed their cynicism in the vaudeville shows of 1940s America by which time they were considered passé.

Now the Martyrs will play anywhere that will have them.
